Meet David Gary
Artist Statement
Having grown up in south Louisiana, the landscape of the South is ingrained in my soul, especially the marsh and cypress-lined waters. Nostalgic, I return to coastal estuaries, fishing communities, bayou vistas, and aging structures for inspiration. The abandoned, the simple, the solitude. An aging boat, resting with dignity in a coastal marina. A crabber, idling out to his daily grind beneath spacious skies. A shuttered restaurant with its memories of generations who gathered there for more than just a meal. I find beauty in the drive along bayou highways where shrimp boats are steps away from the road and where homes, perched on pilings, make these communities what they are….resilient.
The increasing loss of our Cajun culture, family-owned farmland, and once vast wetlands makes me want to celebrate the history, adaptability, and resourcefulness of the hard-working people of my beautiful state through my work.
As an outdoor painter, I don’t mind the ever-changing light conditions, the heat, the humidity or the bugs. The unpredictable conditions are what makes it a challenge. Painting what I see “alla prima”, or “all at once”, is my preferred way to work, and I hope the immediacy shows in the impressions I make.

Artist Bio
David Gary, a dedicated plein air landscape painter from Baton Rouge, brings the vibrant spirit and natural beauty of his state to life through his art. Hunting and fishing amidst the marshes and moss-draped cypress bayous of Louisiana, David developed a deep connection to the landscapes he paints. Whether it’s the sun setting over a tranquil marsh or the dappled sunlight filtering among the remnants of a plantation, David’s paintings evoke a sense of place and atmosphere that resonates with viewers.
Prior to his artistic pursuits, David founded Redstick Internet in 1997, one of Louisiana’s earliest web development firms, where he worked daily with design and composition. Fortunately, the urge to use those skills outside of the digital world beckoned him to follow in his (artist) mother’s footsteps. David turned to painting in oil, and for the past seven years, has focused exclusively on plein air techniques that allow him to capture the essence of the outdoors. His journey as an artist began with formal training at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, where he developed a strong foundation in classical painting techniques. His mother, artist Rhea Gary, studied there previously under renowned artist/instructor Auseklis Ozols, whom David also studied with for two years. This education, along with Academy instructors such as Phil Sandusky, Billy Solitario, Jean Cassels, and others, provided him with the skills to translate his observations of nature into expressive artworks.
David is currently the President of The Art Guild of Louisiana, the founder of Baton Rouge Plein Air, a member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society, Outdoor Painters Society and the Baton Rouge Arts Council. David has participated in the Shadows on the Techs Plein Air Competition three times, attended Plein Air South five times, and attended more three-day workshops than he can count. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous shows and collections across Louisiana, where they have garnered praise for their authentic portrayal of the state’s landscapes.
As he looks to the future, David remains committed to exploring new techniques and expanding his artistic vision. His goal is to continue capturing the beauty of Louisiana’s landscapes and sharing it with audiences far and wide, preserving moments in time that depict the essence of the Bayou State.
David finds his ultimate inspiration in his faith and family life, which grounds and motivates him. When not painting, he also enjoys hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking and photography.
